The artist has Joseph carrying a candle and Mary kneeling in adoration of the Christ Child, as in the influential vision of Bridget of Sweden a century before. But the child is presented as in images before Bridget: swaddled and in a manger at which the ox and ass are feeding. Bridget did not mention angels, and they are less common in the 15th century than earlier.
